Physiology of an Erection
Understanding the physical erection process helps you understand why Z-STRIPSTM are so effective. The penis contains erectile chambers filled with a soft tissue. In the flaccid, un-stimulated state, smooth penile muscles are tense and restrict the arteries from filling the erectile chambers with blood. Sensory perception (sight, touch, hearing and smell) and mental stimulation (thoughts) start the erection process. Sexual excitement picked up by the sensory system triggers impulses from the brain to release a chemical messenger (nitric oxide) that causes the smooth penile muscles to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the erectile chambers. The blood creates pressure, making the penis expand and harden. The expanded tissue, clamps down on the veins, trapping the blood in the erectile chambers, thereby sustaining the erection. When the smooth penile muscles begin to contract, the inflow of blood is reversed, the erectile chambers empty, and the penis softens. |
